COVID-19 UPDATE

NEWS is here to help!

NEWS is committed to supporting victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, especially during this time of escalated stress and anxiety. Out of deep respect for the health of our employees and their families, our service deliveries have been altered slightly. In no way will our commitment to providing safety, hope, healing and empowerment for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse be minimized.

NEWS considers itself to be an “essential service” and we remain active and available to support those individuals and families suffering during this uncertain time.

On March 17th, NEWS staff started offering services remotely. NEWS program staff will do everything possible to provide compassionate trauma-informed care throughout this situation, with as little disruption as possible.

As of March 27th, NEWS is working to continue to maintain safe housing for our clients. We are experiencing a high volume of housing assistance requests. People requesting housing assistance may be asked to be put on a wait list to be contacted at a later date. We understand this is a very stressful time. We will contact those requesting services as quickly as possible. We ask that people requesting housing assistance have patience with us during this time as the NEWS Housing Program is doing its best to keep up with the needs of our community.

If you, or anyone you know, needs to access NEWS services at any time, please have them call our 24-hour help line (707) 255-6397 for immediate assistance. Also, visit us at www.napanews.org or email us at info@NapaNEWS.org.

Thank you for your understanding and consideration,

Tracy Lamb

Volunteering

65-hour Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Counselor Training

The next volunteer training will be June 2020
Weekdays

The cost will be $75 for training with a manual on a flash drive, $90 for training with a printed manual, and $300 for those taking the training for professional development only, and will not be an active volunteer for NEWS. Scholarships are available for those with financial need wishing to be active volunteers. Please email asoto@cityofnapa.org for more information.

This training is mandated by the State of California CAL-EMA. Individuals who complete this 65-Hour training and a successful evaluation thereafter will be a qualified Domestic Violence Counselor and Sexual Assault Counselor.

You must be at least 18 years old to participate.

There are many ways to volunteer with NEWS, here are a few of the opportunities to get involved.

  • To work directly with survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault, there is requirement that you attend a 65-hour training session, as well as monthly in-service meetings.  Training is typically held twice per year, in the spring and fall.  We are looking for non-judgmental, good listeners to help with our 24-hour response team, court advocacy program, and other supportive services.
  • NEWS holds several community events and fundraisers throughout the year and always needs volunteers to help with various event-related duties. It could be anything from setting up and decorating a venue, to selling tickets, or serving wine -- and lots of things in between.
  • Getting the word about domestic violence and sexual assault and the resources available through NEWS is another important volunteer opportunity. If you like public speaking, or would like to help distribute information or attend resource fairs, this may be the job for you.

For more information about enrolling in the volunteer training, helping with events, or outreach opportunities, please email Ana Soto at asoto@cityofnapa.org and thank you for your willingness to help.
