NEWS

This month we are celebrating Women’s History Month, including International Women's Day on March 8th! In honor of this month, we are proud to highlight one of California’s most amazing women, State Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry of the Fourth District.

From the beginning of her term in 2017, Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry has been huge supporter of NEWS and the work that we do throughout the County. During her time in the Assembly, she has worked on a broad range of legislation. We are so appreciative of the focus Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry has placed on issues revolving around women, children, health care, and internet connectivity.

To illustrate, this year she is working on AB 1264. This bill establishes Project ECHO, a Children’s Mental Health Grant Program which connects primary care clinicians and school-based professionals with youth mental health specialists. The goal of this program is to bring a higher level of awareness and resources to address the mental health needs of our youth, especially given the effects triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry is also hard at work on AB 791. The purpose of this bill is to expand access to trauma-informed childcare trainings by creating the Trauma-Informed Childcare Training Grants Program. The goal of this program is to offer it as a part of a block grant to support early learning and care programs.

Navigating through the maze of state government agencies can be a daunting task. Residents can become easily and understandably frustrated. We are incredibly grateful that Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry and her team are consistently available to assist constituents, while working toward solutions to a wide variety of issues and topics that affect us all.

This last year has been exceptionally challenging due to the large and rapid increase of unemployment due to Covid19. Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry and her team is working nonstop to help constituents with their unemployment claims. Their assistance has ensured that individuals and families received the benefits they needed and deserved.

“From legislation addressed by Capitol staff to constituent services provided by my District staff, our work is truly a team effort,” Aguiar-Curry shared, “and NEWS is an integral partner and a valued team member.”

If you have any questions about legislation or are in need of assistance, call Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry Napa District Office at (707) 224-0440.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN MARCH

The purpose of Women’s History Month is to celebrate women’s amazing contributions to our history, culture, and society. Here at NEWS, we salute those women who have made our communities better places in which to live, work, and play.

International Women’s Day is March 8th. Every year, people from around the world honor this day by celebrating the strong and powerful women in their lives.

Celebrating women is easy! We recommend shopping at women-owned businesses or donating your time, money, or resources to nonprofits. You may even want to gift a bouquet of Mimosa Flowers to the important women in your life. Also known as the official flower of International Women’s Day, the tradition of gifting Mimosa Flowers originated in Italy.

NEWS has a 40-year tradition of providing safety, resources, and leadership opportunities to women in Napa County. We hope you will consider supporting us in honor of International Women’s Day. Please click here to make a donation.

REFLECTIONS OF NEWS

By Jeanna, NEWS volunteer and former client

Potential. What did they know? I used to hate it when my teachers would say I had so much potential. It was a dirty word, and I would wonder how they thought they knew me. I was defiant and headstrong then. I knew what I wanted, and nobody was going to tell me different or get in my way. Nobody except him. I guess he saw it too and it scared him. Maybe he thought it would lead me away from him or out from under his control. He stole my potential. Along with it went my dignity, self-worth, ambition, and 17 years. Where did that time go? Where did I go? I would look in the mirror and see nothing, just a shell of a human, all deflated and dead in the eyes. Where was the life and the twinkle and the hope? What happened to the person who knew that the world was her oyster?

Mirror mirror on the wall

Who has potential through it all?

And the mirror answered: you do my dear

It’s still there

Grab hold, and don’t despair

You can take it back any day

It was never his anyway

Help us make a difference

NEWS was formed in 1981 when a group of community members realized there was no safe place for women and children to go when they were fleeing abuse. Today NEWS has grown into a strong organization with a dedicated group of staff and volunteers providing direct client services as well as shelter 24 hours a day/7 days a week, to approximately 1300 people each year.

THANKFUL FOR OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS!
