NEWS

March 2020 was a month NEWS will never forget. Within a matter of days, NEWS staff modified, adjusted, and adapted critical services for survivors in order to provide them remotely. With the entire staff equipped with laptops and Zoom capability, we were ready to go.

In a field where human connection is vital, these service revisions were especially challenging. Fortunately, with passion and creativity, NEWS staff met these challenges and by the end of the month we had transitioned our shelter clients to hotel rooms, were filing protective orders virtually, were providing crisis counseling via Zoom, and much more.

Today, 14 months later, we are excited to make yet another change; reinstating in-person client services by reopening our emergency safe house and public administrative office. As restrictions loosen, NEWS will move forward to expand in-person services at a pace that keeps the needs and health of survivors and our staff at the forefront. We will continue to expand our services as safety and demand allow. We are not exactly sure what things will be like in the future, but we do know NEWS will be here to help, and will continue to keep the community informed.

Please contact NEWS directly if you need an appointment or for further details, or if you have any questions.

“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” ~S. Maraboli

In peace,

Shea Hunter, NEWS Program Director

NEWS readies for full re-opening with upgrades to admin and shelter offices

We took advantage of staff and clients meeting remotely during the past year and remodeled the NEWS admin offices. Even the shelter offices got a facelift to be more welcoming to clients. Safety is a priority at NEWS, so the Admin office on Pear Tree Lane now has a new separate, safe, and comfortable waiting room for clients, and new offices for our intake coordinator and support services advocate. Thank you to the wonderful vision of Suzi Moret of Divine Properties for making it all look warm and welcoming!

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month

NEWS is committed to antiracism and anti-violence. In the past year, we have seen a wave of crimes against the AAPI community. The first step in fighting racism is learning. We encourage you to join us in seeking further education and taking meaningful action towards unlearning the racist and hateful systems that uphold white supremacy in America. Here is a good place to start: AAPI Victory Alliance. We can stop hate together!

At NEWS we just want to help moms be moms. So, for the month of May we will be honoring those mothers, or mother-figures, who are near and dear to us. We will be telling stories on social media of those very important people in our lives who impacted, empowered, inspired, and loved us. Watch for the hashtag #MonthofMoms on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts where you will read those simple stories of what our clients are striving for… just being a good mom.
