NEWS

I’ve been with NEWS for 20 years now and have seen a lot of changes over the years. One of the changes I’m most proud of is the addition of the Miner House, a modular unit that was built on the shelter property. This came about to create additional shelter space and also make sure we had a comfortable and inviting space for male and LGBTQ+ victims of domestic violence.

Our first Miner House client, a father with two young children, had initially been apprehensive to reach out for services because he was a man. He was so grateful that we were there to help him and provide him and his kids with a safe and supportive place to stay. He accessed all of the NEWS services and ultimately the family ended up successfully housed in a home of their own.

"When we were given the Miner Family Foundation donation for extra facilities at our shelter, I was amazed, uplifted, and drawn to the project. Obviously, this was in my wheelhouse, being in construction all my life. I volunteered to spearhead and project manage the building. There were many challenges, and day to day changes to those challenges.

"This process was very rewarding. So much time was spent meeting contractors and helping staff and board members understand the process. I think back and am actually amazed at the amount of time spent putting this effort together, and helping it come to fruition. I am most appreciative of the opportunity to help. I was also appreciative of the NEWS Board and their understanding and empathy to the obstacles placed in front of me to achieve this building. We chose excellent contractors to complete the task and the product was amazing."

Help us raise $10,000 by October 31!!

Funds raised between now and October 31 will help house
DV survivors in need of emergency shelter.

As COVID-19 rages on, we continue to house DV victims and their families in hotel rooms to ensure their safety and health—from both abuse and the coronavirus.

Help us raise $10,000 by the end of October to support 10 more families in need of a confidential and safe home following abuse!

Our special campaign lasts through June 2022,
so consider making a sustaining pledge!
