The NEWS Prevention, Education & Outreach Program started in 2013 with a Rape Prevention Education grant from CalOES. It has evolved into a robust program that includes educating thousands of students each year about healthy relationships, especially during February’s Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. In 2021, the NEWS Prevention team won the Napa County Office of Education Prevention Champion Award.

As we continue to fight through the challenges of COVID-19, social and emotional development continues to be a top priority. With rises in emotional distress, anxiety, depression and feelings of powerlessness, especially in youth, our presence is important. The work that we do at the middle and high school wellness centers across the county is key to breaking the cycle of violence in families.

Carla Andrade-Maston, NEWS Youth Prevention Services Manager, since 2015

“Unhealthy relationships impact the mental health of a student and this ultimately reflects in their ability to thrive in different areas of their lives.

"The flexibility and student/family centered support from NEWS allowed our Wellness Centers to be creative in how we support students. Our case manager, Carla, implemented different ways of engaging our students that range from workshops to direct individual and/or group support.

"During distance learning, Carla adapted her support and found ways of engaging with students virtually despite the challenges presented with this format. I am very grateful for NEWS as they have always responded to change and new environments with a willingness to adapt and be responsive to the needs of our community.”

- Roxana Plancarte, School Wellness Program Social Worker with the Napa Valley Unified School District

2021 Holiday Giving is Around the Corner!

It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of 2021! You know what that means, NEWS’s Annual Holiday Campaign is just around the corner. This month we give thanks to our community of donors for their enduring support to NEWS. As we approach December, we look ahead to all of the wonderful services your end-of-year donations make possible: helping a family obtain emergency shelter, food, and clothes; ensuring family remains housed; and giving our survivors a qualified and confidential advocate to support their needs.

This year we kick off our end-of-year giving on November 30 - #GivingTuesday! There are two ways to make an impact this year: through our Annual Holiday Campaign where you can make a donation directly to NEWS and through Napa Valley CanDo’s Give!Guide, where you can make a donation to NEWS, as well as explore other Napa non-profits doing good in our community!

Stay tuned for more details next month on goals, match opportunities, and more as we close out 2021!
