Dear Friends of NEWS,

Each October, we recognize National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. These last few months, we have been particularly saddened by several deadly domestic violence incidents that have happened right here in the Bay Area.

We at NEWS, and those in our network of domestic violence agencies, come to work each day knowing that lives are on the line and that domestic violence can be extremely dangerous and can turn deadly. Every time a life is lost, we ask ourselves what we might have done to prevent such a tragedy. We come to work each day, determined that we will do all we can to prevent another life lost to domestic violence.

In October, we honor the brave survivors. We hold them up with respect and we walk beside them as they make the most difficult decisions and face many challenges in order to protect themselves and their children.

…and we honor the fallen. Our hearts go out to our sister agency CORA, and the family members and loved ones of Karina Castro, who lost her life in a horrific incident in San Mateo County.

Please support your local domestic violence agency.

Tracy Lamb, NEWS Executive Director

Youth Prevention Team Use DVAM to Promote Healthy Relationships at Schools

For Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the NEWS YOUthMatter Prevention Team will be on three school campuses: American Canyon Middle School, New Technology High School, and St. Helena High School. We are working with student groups to run campaigns on each campus to bring awareness to their classmates. What a great leadership opportunity!

OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Help us raise $5,000 by October 31!!

Funds raised in October will support our children’s program, Kids Exposed to Domestic Violence (KEDS).

And guess what!? We have a special match opportunity for you to double your impact this month!

Children exposed to domestic violence have special needs. The stress and trauma they experience can lead to long-term physical and mental health illness. KEDS connects families with community resources and engages children in creative activities so they feel safe and loved, a first step to overcoming their trauma and interrupting the cycle of violence.

Help us raise $5,000 by the end of October to support our KEDS program!
