November is a special time. The leaves are transforming and the air is crisp. Excitement for the upcoming holidays is palpable. It is a time to give thanks and share gratitude. Research shows that practicing gratitude can improve physical health, mental well-being, and overall happiness. Here at NEWS, we reflect on all of those in our community that we are thankful for. Our survivors, who are so brave. Our staff and volunteers, who are so dedicated. And our partners and donors, who supports us through thick and thin.

Let’s practice and pass the gratitude this month, alongside that gravy. Follow us on social media as we hear from some of our honorary board members about why they are thankful for NEWS.

Thank you,

Andi Grote, NEWS Development Director

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”

~Voltaire

When Lisa came to NEWS, she was lost, severely depressed and scared. Lisa was forced to make one of the hardest decisions of her life: to escape domestic violence. Once she left her home, she stayed with friends and slowly made attempts to restart her life.

Lisa was hardworking and had always maintained a job as a housekeeper. Unfortunately, COVID-19 made her job unstable and, before she knew it, she was hardly working at all. With little to no income, and no safe place to go, she came to NEWS for help.

NEWS Crisis Intervention Advocates immediately were able to provide crisis counseling and assess her immediate needs. As a result of these discussions, Lisa entered the NEWS Shelter and began working with our Housing Advocates on a sustainable housing plan. We helped her locate permanent housing and we were able to use our flexible financial assistance to pay for her rental deposit. A few weeks later, Lisa moved into her new home. After two months, Lisa called her NEWS case manager to check in. After a few short moments she began to cry, but that day they were tears of happiness. Lisa said, “You are all my guardian angels; I never even realized people like you existed”.

If you are experiencing abuse or would just like some information, please call our help line, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We asked our Honorary Board Members Why They Are Thankful For NEWS

There are
Many forms of violence
Many forms of abuse
Many forms of families
Violence and abuse
Endangers and destroys
Families
Whatever form your family
NEWS
(Nurturing Empowerment Worth and Safety)
Provides the bandages
Shelter, care, counseling
To staunch the
Bleeding of violence and abuse
But NEWS
Tackles the source
Extending to our community therapies for
Anger, alienation, isolation
Working to unplug
Families from violence and abuse
NEWS; healthy families, healthy community
