Making your list, and checking it twice? Don’t forget to add "Support to NEWS" to your holiday to dos this year! Our staff work around the clock to ensure survivors are safe and housed. A little goes a long way when you donate to NEWS:

$15 helps buy toiletries for an emergency shelter client.

$50 covers the co-pay for a survivor’s child to go to the dentist.

$100 feeds a large family for a week.

When you donate, you are not just giving money, but you are providing courage and confidence to the most vulnerable in our community. With less than two weeks left of December, now is the time to make your end-of-year donations before the clock strikes 2023!

Join us this month as we explore one client’s journey with NEWS. We’ll explore the various challenges she faced and the services and support NEWS provided to get her and her family into a violence-free home. Please note: as this is a real client story, the name of the client has been changed and small details have been altered to protect the client’s privacy.

Chapter 4: Hope is a Precious Commodity

The daunting task of finding a unit to rent is difficult even for the most desirable applicants. For survivors of domestic violence, it comes with the added stain of damaged credit and rental history, low income, and security concerns. Add to that Section 8 – which carries with it a bad reputation – and multiple children, Olivia’s applications were denied over and over again. Her limited time in the Shelter was running out and the future looked gloomy – everyone was losing hope. But the relentless Housing Advocate kept moving forward, talking with every landlord she could and advocating for Olivia’s situation, while also educating them about the dynamics of domestic violence, NEWS services, and Section 8, in an attempt to put them at ease renting to Olivia and her family.

This is the fourth of five chapters of Olivia’s story. In next week’s final episode, find out how Olivia overcame adversity.

If you are experiencing abuse or would just like some information, please call our help line, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
