We are kicking off Women’s History Month today by celebrating International Women’s Day! NEWS has a long history of helping, empowering, and providing safety for strong women surviving domestic violence and sexual abuse. We want to take this moment to recognize how important it is to uplift the women and girls in our lives – not just in March, but every day. Especially as a new report published by the CDC underscores how the past three years have increased the vulnerability of women and girls across the country, who are reporting increased suicidal ideation and increased instances of forced sex.

We can do better to support our women and girls! It starts with education and resources. Follow NEWS on our social media accounts at Facebook and Instagram to learn about our outreach to youth, the services that we provide, and the stories of survivors who are breaking the chain of violence right here in Napa County.

Karen Calhoun, Marketing & Communications Director

If you are experiencing abuse or would just like some information, please call our help line, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Join us this Women's History Month as we partner with PlumpJack Collection of Wineries to celebrate and elevate the women who make it happen. PlumpJack Collection could not have said it better: “we wouldn't be where we are today without the fearless, trailblazing women around us.” Stay tuned to @NEWS4Peace and @PlumpJackCollection in March as we share stories of the women around us who inspire us each day. Need another reason to celebrate? We could not be more honored to receive a portion of wine sales in March from the PlumpJack Collection of Wineries, including PlumpJack, Odette, and Cade. So, live that #PlumpJackLife and support a great cause in your community.

Editors Note: We know it might seem strange to be introducing our only male staff member during women's history month, but we are just excited to have you meet our new Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator who is here to support women, children, men, and the LGBTQ community! Read on. We think you will understand.

Hola! My name is Michel Mora and I'm the new Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator at NEWS. I was born in Morelia Michoacan, Mexico and raised in Woodland, CA. I attended Woodland Community College and Sacramento State University (Stingers up!), graduating in 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. I began working at Seed Tech, which is a company that plants and harvest sunflower seeds. Working in the field really gave me an opportunity to work with people from all walks of life and to help the underserved communities in Woodland. It also gave me one of the most valuable lessons life has to offer, the value of hard work. I've always felt that my purpose in this life was to serve, I just didn't know exactly what that looked like. Coming from a single parent household my mother always made sure that my brother and I had the best opportunities to reach the American Dream. Basically, my whole adult life I was raised by strong independent women. That is what led me to NEWS. I want men to take a more active approach, not only in volunteering, but in speaking up and showing up. I am very new to this line of work but I look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to make a difference in the community. I will help train our invaluable volunteers and coordinate community outreach events! Working for NEWS is truly a blessing and I can't think of a better way to serve than through this great organization. Looking forward to serving you all.

Attentamente su servidor,

Michel Mora, Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator

Free Cone Day is back at Ben & Jerry's in downtown Napa and NEWS has been selected as a Scoopin' Non-profit! NEWS will be sharing the tips with Cope Family Center on April 3, 2023. We need some volunteers to be ice cream scoopers that afternoon and evening (2 hour shifts). There will be more details to come, but if you are available that day, and would like to help us out, please email MichelM@NapaNEWS.org and let him know you would like more information. Thanks!
