NEWS Awarded National Grant To Support Survivors of Domestic Violence and Critical Services Focused on Mental Health Resiliency & Positive Relationship Skills

November is here, and at NEWS we are so thankful for the support we receive from our community and other organizations around the country who partner with us. I am excited to share that NEWS has been named a recipient of the “Healthy Relationships Community Grant,” a joint effort between Major League Baseball (MLB) and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA). Our grant of $50,000 is part of $1 million in funds committed so far by MLB and MLBPA to 21 organizations across the United States. Like NEWS, these organizations work to support survivors of domestic violence, promote mental health resiliency, and develop positive relationship skills in youth as a preventive measure to break the cycle of violence.

This MLB funding will support the NEWS Crisis Intervention team which is the front line to helping survivors of domestic violence who are in crisis get stabilized. They receive help with court paperwork and appearances and are connected to other NEWS services such as food and housing, and help for their children to learn how to cope in their new and changing situation.

On behalf of NEWS, and the survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse we serve, we wish to thank Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, for supporting our efforts to create a more safe and healthy community. We are honored to join the other outstanding organizations across the country as recipients of this grant, and who tirelessly work to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. We appreciate the MLB's and MLBPA's commitment to violence prevention and stopping violence before it starts, and we are thrilled to partner with them in this effort.

NEWS RECEIVES FUNDING FROM NAPA VALLEY VINTNERS/AUCTION NAPA VALLEY

We are also pleased to share that we have been awarded $245,000 in funding from the Napa Valley Vintners through its annual community fundraiser, Auction Napa Valley. We are grateful to the NVV for their continued partnership, which enables us to provide safety and hope to over 1,500 people in Napa County. These funds emphasize supporting children and youth whose emotional and/or physical health are at risk due to adverse childhood experiences, and supporting adults seeking emotional and/or physical health and wellness. Especially during these challenging times that saw the cancellation of Auction Napa Valley this year due to COVID-19, we would like to express our deep appreciation to NVV for its commitment to supporting our work. Thank you for giving, NVV!

Coaches Recruited to Help Stop Dating Violence

“Coach Baille introduced the athletic department at Napa Valley College to the NEWS About Sports program. The program is directed at athletes, coaches, and uses their roles on campus to reduce dating violence and abuse among our students. Coaches participate with their athletes to examine behaviors and propose alternative and healthy patterns of communication and action. Specific steps are proposed for the athletes to make not only personal changes, but also larger systemic changes. Coach Baille builds on the positive influence that sport plays in our culture and creates an environment to bring about change to end relationship violence, promote gender equity and empower student athletes to become change agents.”
